National External Diploma Program (NEDP)

Through a series of take-home projects and spot check interviews, this program measures your academic and life skills, including, but not limited to:  

• Reading
• Writing
• Mathematics
• Oral communication
• Critical thinking

As you work toward your high school diploma, you will demonstrate and increase your awareness of occupational, social, consumer, aesthetic, government, and scientific issues by:

• Using data-gathering skills
• Manipulating data
• Analyzing data
• Applying data
• Solving problems

This program is recommended for Adults who: 

• Are highly motivated
• Are 21 years or older
• Are self-directed
• Prefer to demonstrate their knowledge in practical ways
• Are comfortable using a computer

Program Features: 

• confidentiality
• flexible study schedule
• Ability to demonstrate mastery of skills without requiring classroom time

Completion Time:

• Varies with the individual student because NEDP is self-paced
• Average completion time is six months to two years

The National External Diploma Program Offers a High School Diploma That Is:

• Issued by New Britain Adult Education
• Recognized by employers
• Accepted by institutions of higher learning

1. Information Session
2. Diagnostic Phase
   • Math assessment (score of 226 in a level D or E CASAS Assessment)
   • Reading assessment (score of 236 in a level D CASAS Assessment)
   • Writing skills assessment (minimum score of 3)
   • Interview
3. Assessment Phase
   • Demonstration of skills through completion of eight comprehensive competencies online tasks
4. Post-Task Assessment
   • Correction of skills not demonstrated in the online tasks
5. Individual Assessment
   • Verification of occupational skills, certified training documentation, advanced assessment, or home management

The following are examples of how you will demonstrate your skills: 

• reading a newspaper or warranty

• participation in government by voting or attending a town meeting

• writing a letter to a member of congress or to a landlord

• measuring a room for carpeting

• computing area and perimeter

• comparing credit scores

• comparing interest rates on a credit/ charge card

• comparing the news as reported through different sources

• writing a letter of complaint, resume, and or letter of application/ interest\

• a current occupation or trade

• home management experience

• advanced academic skills

• training in a new field
